Frequently Asked Questions: What does Pharmaceutical mean? Cosmetic quality is what department, drug and grocery stores typically sell. These include the big and expensive brands and the cheaper ones. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows cosmetic grade products to contain up to 30% bacteria. This means that ingredients may only be 70% pure. It is a large breeding ground for bacteria. This is why makeup packaging tells us to throw away any unused product every 90-180 days. And 95% of the skincare industry is cosmetic quality and unregulated by the FDA. Cosmetic companies are not required to register their products with the FDA, while cosmetic products are subjective and do not reflect or require scientific testing. Pharmaceutical grade ingredients used in skin care products are FDA regulated. The FDA requires that pharmaceutical grade ingredients be 99.9% pure. Products must contain 0.1%, or less, of bacteria. Only 5% of the skin care industry is under the regulation established by the FDA and considered pharmaceutical grade skin care products. All ingredients, in all Gerda Spillmann products are 100% Pharmaceutical grade. What makes Bio-Fond Foundation a mineral foundation? The base of Bio-Fond is a natural clay, rich with minerals. This clay also lends its color to our foundations giving us a wide range of foundations. This clay is processed, purified and refined leaving behind only the minerals that are good for you, the color to make you feel beautiful and the natural defense from the sun to keep you protected.

What is the best way to apply foundation? Depending on the amount of coverage you want here is a list of suggestions: Brush – use a larger, round brush (ie Kabuki) for a light, sheer finish Sponge-a high quality sponge will give you a fuller finish and is ideal when also applying a primer or moisturizer; replace sponges often to prevent bacteria. Fingertips – thoroughly wash and cleanse your hands before and after. This application will give you the most coverage.

What order should I use the products in? The most critical step in skin care is cleansing – we recommend cleansing twice daily before applying any products. Typically products closest to your skin will have the highest probability of effecting change within your skin. If moisture is your concern, apply a moisturizer first. If wrinkles and fine lines are most important to you, apply the Renaissance Age Serum first followed by a moisturizer. During the daytime follow these products with your Bio-Fond Foundation Makeup. Before bed apply a more moisturizing product to help your skin during the natural restoration period. How long will the compact/product last? The Bio-Fond Foundation compact will last approximately 3-4 months depending on your amount of usage. When used lightly and infrequently it can last up to a year. Skin Care products will vary in length but are concentrated for maximum usage.

Can you mix products? All of our products are synergistically created, meaning that are meant to work in tandem with one another. While some products can be combined and then applied, others are better to use in an order – one after another. RAO, or Renaissance Active Oil, is a great product to combine with a moisturizer for an intensifying effect. Renaissance Age Serum is a product better applied alone and then followed with a moisturizer.

Does Gerda Spillmann participate in animal testing? No. We have never used animals in any sort of testing. Formulas are carefully designed and crafted by some of the top Swiss cosmetic formulators. We are so sure of the ingredients in our products we do not feel the need to engage in unethical and dangerous testing.

How does Gerda Spillmann help the environment? Our products are produced and manufactured in an setting where little goes to waste, recycling as much as possible and limiting our impact on the environment. Where allowed, Gerda Spillmann packages products with little or no outside packaging, we use only eco-friendly vegetable dyes for printing and all recyclable plastics and boxes.

What does Hydrophilic mean? Literally it means ‘Water-Loving’. Most Gerda Spillmann products are hydrophilic which allows them to be combined with water and still be effective. Combining one of your moisturizers with a small amount of water will help to nourish your skin but will also allow your product to last longer, since you will be using less. A lot of our products are hydrophilic but not all. You will want to double check with the products that you use; items like the Renaissance Age Serum are not hydrophilic and not meant to be combined with water.
